About Us

Who are we?
Hi, I’m Caroline (aged 54) and my husband and I created our craft business from scratch in November 2019. I love all things vintagy, natural and fun. This is obviously why I’m still married to Phil after nearly 30 years.
Where did our craft business start?
Just before Christmas 2019 we had the idea to make gifts for our friends and family by engraving cutting boards. However I soon fell in love with spoons. I love the shape of them and the connection between providing love through food that a wooden spoon embodies. It makes them a really lovely, useful gift.
I could instantly see the appeal – design ideas were pouring out of my head and I didn’t want to part with any of them – so I rapidly booked some last minute Christmas Fayres. It was rewarding to see how much other people liked the engravings, so much so that they bought lots and Beatroot Gifts grew some very strong roots.
It’s been a lot of fun starting a new craft business. I’ve used skills gained through running businesses all my life to set up Beatroot Gifts. I created the logo, set up all the social media, as you do in 2020, and Phil set about designing and making spoons and boards. As you can imagine there were lots of disagreements about designs. If you see a woodpecker skeleton I think you can blame Phil.
Making new designs is my favourite thing to do but I also love experimenting with things like pencil sketches, lino print design and kids’ artwork. It seems like almost anything looks good engraved on the back of a spoon.
What I think
I think having something creative in your life is so important, whether it is music, drawing, singing, crafting, you need a balance, a place where you are open to fresh ideas, a way to connect with other people. If I could think of anything to say to you after reading all this, it’s go out and do something that creates, that gives back to the world, and share it with others.
